The Faculty of Dentistry at RSU is one of the oldest faculties and the Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1919, as part of the University of Latvia. In 1950 the Faculty of Medicine was separated from the University of Latvia and Riga Medical Institute was founded as an independent institution of higher education with the university as its base. It has over 27 years’ experience in educating international students and over 23% of the students come from abroad.

The City

Riga is the capital and the largest city in the Republic of Latvia with a population of 641 423 (by actual place, 2017; The Central Statistical Bureau). It is also the political, economical and cultural centre of the country and a city of dynamic improvement and change.

It has an enchanting medieval Old Town with a maze of cobbled streets and small cafés scattered all around it, and the greatest concentration of 19th and 20th century Art Nouveau architecture in Europe. However, Riga is not just history, old buildings and museums. You will also find it to be a vibrant modern city with a rich cultural life.

There are many museums and art galleries in Riga, e.g., Latvian War Museum, Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, Latvian National Museum of Art, National History Museum of Latvia, Riga Porcelain Museum to name a few. There are also very interesting museums which are a must see for students including: Riga Art Nouveau Museum, Ethnographic Open Air Museum, Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, Pauls Stradiņš Museum for History of Medicine.

Entry requirements

High/secondary school education (12-years education) and to have obtained a Diploma/School Leaving Certificate/GCE A-2.

To have studied, completed and obtained grades in Biology and Chemistry in high school. – both of these two subjects at their A2 level. Recommended to have Maths or Physics as the third subject.

Must have a B grade or above in Chemistry and Biology for UK citizens.

Entrance Exam

There is no entrance exam for this university and we do not charge any agency fees for our advanced package if you wish to study at this university.

Course Structure - Medicine

The university offers a 6 Year MD course that is taught in English throughout the entire duration.

Latvian language is compulsory to learn during the first two years of studies.

The first 2 years are non-clinical years and includes the following subjects: Anatomy, Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry and Physiology.

The next 3 years are the Clinical years where you spend more time in the hospitals gaining practical and first-hand experience into life as a doctor.

In your final year, you will take the State Exam in order to achieve your licence to practice. After successful completion of the exam, you will achieve the professional qualification of Doctor of Medicine (MD) and be awarded a Master’s degree.

The course is recognised in the UK and meets the EU requirements throughout its duration. The teachers have long standing experience and you have access to modern facilities aiding your success in the degree.

Course Structure - Dentistry

The university offers a 6 Year Dental Medicine course that is taught in English throughout the entire duration.

Latvian language is compulsory to learn during the first two years of studies.

The first two years spent learning the fundamental aspects of medicine and Biology. You will study subjects like Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry and Prosthetics.

The next 4 years will be spent doing more clinical practice as well as an internship period of about 6 months.

In your final year, you will take the State Exam in order to achieve your licence to practice. After successful completion of the exam, you will receive a Master’s degree.

The course is recognised in the UK and meets the EU requirements throughout its duration. The teachers have long standing experience and you have access to the very best modern facilities in Bulgaria aiding your success in the degree.
