Medical University Sofia: Entrance Exam, Requirements & How to Apply

Medical University Sofia

Medical University Sofia is one of the most established options for students looking to study Medicine in Bulgaria. The university offers an English-taught Medicine programme, so it can be an option for UK students who don’t secure a place at a UK medical school or are looking for an alternative route into medicine.

The application process is different from applying through UCAS. You’ll need to meet the academic requirements, prepare your documents and sit the university’s entrance exam in English, Biology and Chemistry.

If you’re looking at Sofia for the 2026 intake, there’s also still time to apply. The university has extended its deadline for foreign students to 25 September 2026, with an additional entrance exam on 2 October 2026.

The Medical University Sofia entrance exam

The entrance exam is made up of three parts:

  • English
  • Biology
  • Chemistry

The exam is held remotely, and you need to pass each component for the examination to be considered successful.

Your exam result is then used alongside your school grades when the university ranks applicants. For the English-language programmes, the competitive score takes into account the Biology and Chemistry grades from your secondary-school diploma and the results from the three parts of the entrance exam.

That means passing the exam does not automatically mean you’ll receive a place. Students are ranked according to their competitive score and the number of places available.

What should you expect?

The Biology and Chemistry sections are based around the level of knowledge expected from your secondary education, so this isn’t something you should leave until the last minute.

The English section is also part of the exam, which is particularly important for international applicants applying to the English-taught programme.

If you’re preparing for the exam, it’s better to work from the Medical University Sofia requirements than to treat it like another UCAT.

Entry requirements

You need to have completed secondary education that gives you the right to continue to higher education in the country where you studied.

For UK students, your existing qualifications will be assessed as part of the application. Biology and Chemistry are particularly important because both subjects are included in the entrance examination.

You’ll also need to meet the university’s English-language requirements for the English-taught programme.

If you’re not sure whether your A levels or other qualifications meet the requirements, this is something we can check before you start the application.

Documents you’ll need

The paperwork is one of the more important parts of applying to Medical University Sofia. You’ll need your secondary education diploma, academic records, proof of your right to continue to higher education, proof of citizenship, photographs and the required application forms and declarations.

Documents issued outside Bulgaria may also need to be legalised, translated and prepared in the format required by the university.

This is where MedConnect can help. Once you submit your documents to us, our team prepares them for your application, including the required translations and legalisation where needed. We’ll also let you know if anything is missing or needs to be corrected before the application is submitted.

You provide the documents; we take care of getting them ready for the university.

2026 application dates

For students applying for the 2026–27 academic year, the university has extended its admission deadline for foreign applicants.

Application deadline: 25 September 2026

Additional entrance exam: 2 October 2026

If you’re applying through MedConnect, 18 September 2026 is our deadline for new applicants.

That’s earlier than the university deadline because we need time to assess your application, prepare the paperwork and make sure everything is ready for submission.

Tuition fees

For the 2026–27 academic year, tuition for Medicine in English is €9,950 per year.

There are also fees for the application and entrance examination:

  • Application/document submission: €55
  • Entrance examination: €210

You’ll need to budget separately for living in Sofia, including accommodation, food, transport and other day-to-day expenses.

Coming back to the UK after graduation

If you’re planning to return to the UK after studying medicine in Sofia, you’ll need to register with the GMC before you can practise.

We can help you understand the UK registration route before you apply, so you know what to expect after graduation and can make a more informed decision about studying in Bulgaria.

How the application works

The application itself isn’t complicated, but there are several things that need to be done correctly.

First, you’ll need to make sure your qualifications meet the university’s requirements. You’ll then prepare your diploma, transcripts and other supporting documents, including any required legalisation and Bulgarian translations.

Once your application has been submitted and processed, you’ll sit the entrance examination in English, Biology and Chemistry.

For the additional 2026 admission round, that exam is on 2 October.

After the exam, applicants are ranked according to the university’s competitive scoring system. Students who receive a place then complete the enrolment process.

Preparing for the entrance exam

The best way to prepare is to focus on the exam you’re actually going to sit.

Biology and Chemistry should be revised at the level covered by the university’s requirements, while English should also be included in your preparation. Timed practice is useful too, particularly once you’ve covered the core material.

If you’re applying through MedConnect, we can also help you prepare for medical entrance exams through our entrance exam preparation resources.
