Dental schools in the UK admit far fewer students per year than medical schools, and demand consistently outstrips supply. Most dental schools don’t enter dentistry clearing at all in a given year. When places do appear, they’re usually gone within hours of results day, and they’re more likely to be for dental therapy or dental hygiene courses than the full BDS degree itself.
If you do want to try, results day is 13 August 2026. You can call dental admissions teams from 8am, but you can’t add a clearing choice in UCAS Hub until 1pm. Worth knowing before you plan your morning around it.
What actually happens if you don’t get the grades
Missing your offer for dentistry doesn’t mean waiting a year and hoping for a different outcome next time. A few real options are worth knowing about:
- UK clearing itself. Worth a genuine attempt on results day, phone calls to admissions teams, checking the UCAS clearing search, all of it, just go in with accurate expectations given how few places tend to appear.
- A gap year and reapplication. A legitimate route many students take. It costs you a year, with no guarantee the outcome looks different next time, but it does give you time to strengthen a UCAT score, gain more work experience, or rework a personal statement that didn’t land.

- When does clinical exposure start? Some programmes get you working with real patients earlier than others.
- Is there an entrance exam, and if so, what does it actually test?
- What’s included in the total cost, tuition, accommodation, any additional exam or registration fees you’ll need to budget for separately?
