Medical Clearing 2026: How Long Do You Really Have?

medical clearing 2026 clearing offer deadline

Medical clearing 2026 moves fast. Most universities give you 24 to 48 hours and no longer.

That window passes faster than you think. On results day you are checking UCAS, reaching out to other universities, and weighing your options all at once. Knowing exactly how the clearing offer deadline works means you make a decision rather than miss one.

What is the clearing offer deadline?

Most universities give you 24 to 48 hours to accept a verbal clearing offer. Some are flexible. Some are not.

Ask the admissions tutor directly: “how long is this offer valid?” Get a specific time, not just “a day or two.” Write it down alongside the name of the person you spoke to.

How a clearing offer works

Clearing has two stages.

Stage one: a verbal offer. An admissions tutor calls to say they want to offer you a place.

Stage two: adding that university in your UCAS Hub. That is when the offer becomes official and binding.

Universities withdraw verbal offers when students wait too long to confirm in UCAS Hub. You cannot hold multiple verbal offers and pick the best one. Confirm quickly or release the place.

The timeline on results day

Results come out from 6am on Thursday 13 August 2026. Clearing lines become active through the morning.

A verbal offer made early on results day usually gives you until the following morning to confirm. Some universities set shorter windows. Always ask.

Once you add a university as your clearing choice in UCAS Hub, that decision is made. You cannot hold a clearing place and apply elsewhere at the same time.

What to do when you receive a verbal offer

When a university makes you a verbal offer, do this in order:

  • Ask how long the offer is valid and get a specific time
  • Ask for the offer in writing by email straight away
  • Think carefully about the university, the course and the location — this is where you are spending the next five to six years
  • To accept: log into UCAS Hub and add the university using the course code and clearing number they gave you
  • To decline: let the university know immediately so the place goes to the next student

Thinking about studying medicine in Europe instead?

Medical clearing 2026 does not have to mean a rushed decision or a lost year. Many students use their clearing offer deadline window to compare a UK clearing place against a European university. This works well as long as the research is done beforehand.

European medical schools MedConnect Europe works with run admissions through August and September. They are not tied to results day and no UCAT is required. If a UK clearing offer comes in and you are unsure, contact us. You still have time to compare your options before the deadline hits.

Universities we work with including Medical University of Plovdiv, Riga Stradins University and Wroclaw Medical University offer English-taught medicine with rolling admissions. No UCAT required. Open to UK students, international students, and students who applied with BTECs or non-standard qualifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I accept a clearing offer and then change my mind?

Yes, but think carefully before confirming. Withdrawing late affects other students waiting for that place and may affect your ability to use UCAS in future cycles. Use your deadline window to decide properly. Confirm only when you are sure.

Can I hold a clearing offer while waiting to hear from another university?

No. Adding a university in UCAS Hub is a commitment. You cannot hold a clearing place and apply elsewhere at the same time.

What happens if I miss the clearing offer deadline?

Contact the university straight away. Flexibility exists in some cases. Do not assume it will be there.

Does the clearing offer deadline apply to European university offers?

No. European universities MedConnect works with keep offers open longer. Their admissions run through August and September. Many students explore both routes at the same time rather than committing to a UK place under pressure.

What should I have ready when an offer comes in?

Your UCAS clearing number
Grades by subject
UCAT score and the year you sat it
One clear sentence on why you want to study medicine

Who is eligible for medical clearing 2026?

You are eligible if any of the following apply:
You did not receive any offers to study medicine
You did not meet the conditions of your firm or insurance choice
You applied after 30 June
You declined your firm place

UCAS Extra is a separate process that runs earlier in the year. If you missed that window, clearing on Thursday 13 August 2026 is your next option. Students applying for a foundation year or gap year and reapplying next cycle should also consider the European route as an alternative entry route.
