Medical clearing 2026 is one of the most misunderstood parts of the UK admissions process, and most students only discover the truth on results morning when it is already too late. This guide covers everything you need to know about medical clearing 2026 before results day arrives.

Confirm vacancies on UCAS and university websites on results day. Availability changes by the hour.
Clearing opens 2 July 2026 but nothing meaningful happens before results day. The date that matters is Thursday 13 August 2026. That is when universities see confirmed grades and release any remaining places. Clearing closes 19 October 2026 but for medicine, if nothing has come through by mid-August, October will not change that.
How medicine clearing works
Medical clearing 2026 follows the same UCAS process as previous years, but with more applicants competing for fewer places. You are eligible if you:
- Did not receive any offers to study medicine
- Did not meet the conditions of your firm or insurance choice
- Applied after 30 June
- Declined your firm place
Your UCAS Hub shows you are in clearing automatically if your offer is withdrawn. Search for medicine places using course codes A100 (standard entry) and A101 (graduate entry). If you receive a verbal offer, add the university in UCAS Hub straight away. It means nothing until it is in the system. Read our clearing offer acceptance guide to understand your timeline once an offer comes in.
The reality of UK medical clearing 2026
Around 25,770 students applied for medicine in 2026, up 10.4% on last year, competing for roughly 8,126 places. By results day virtually every seat is already taken.
The total number of medicine clearing places across the whole of the UK in a typical year is fewer than 50. Some years there are none. This is not like clearing for other subjects. You are looking for a seat that may not exist.
Places go fast. Within hours of results coming out, sometimes within thirty minutes. If nothing is showing by midday it is almost certainly gone.
How MedConnect Europe can help
Many universities we work with have rolling admissions running through August and September. No UCAT required. We have placed students as late as August in previous years for a September or October start the same year. No gap year lost.
This is open to UK students, international students, and students who applied with BTECs or non-standard qualifications.
Graduates from schools listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools can apply for GMC registration and work in the NHS. Our founders are NHS doctors who took this route.
Universities we work with that take late applications include Medical University of Plovdiv and Medical University of Varna in Bulgaria, Riga Stradins University in Latvia, Wroclaw Medical University in Poland and Tbilisi State Medical University in Georgia.
Your options if clearing fails
Gap year and reapply
The most common route. Check each university’s resit policy first as several reject candidates resitting A-levels. Use the year to improve your UCAT score, build clinical experience and fix what held your application back.
Accept a science degree and apply for graduate entry medicine
If you hold an offer for biomedical science, pharmacology or a related subject and have not declined it, that place is still open. Finish the degree and apply for a four-year graduate entry programme.

Frequently Asked questions
Are there medicine places in clearing every year?
Not reliably. The total across all UK universities is typically fewer than 50, and in some years there are none at all. Most places are filled during the standard admissions cycle long before results day.
Can international students use medicine clearing?
Technically yes, but visa timelines and the speed at which places disappear make it very difficult in practice. European universities with rolling admissions are a more realistic route for international students.
Can I study medicine in Europe if clearing fails?
Yes, and start the same September. Many universities we work with accept applications through August and September with no UCAT required. Graduates can apply for GMC registration and work in the NHS. Get in touch on results day on 020 8190 0310.
How quickly do clearing places go?
Within hours of results coming out on Thursday 13 August 2026, sometimes within thirty minutes. Being ready from early morning gives you the best chance.
How does studying medicine in Europe compare to the UK?
Same degree length, five to six years. Taught in English at our partner universities. Graduates can return to the UK and apply for GMC registration. No UCAT, lower fees than UK private options, and rolling admissions mean no lost year if UK clearing does not work out. Read about working in the UK after studying medicine in Europe.
